I started making our playdough at home when Judah, my son, was very little. Not because I wanted to be a crafty mom or anything but simply because he would put almost everything he could into his mouth. And now it’s the same story with his sister.

Even though most store-bought playdough is labeled non-toxic I feel better knowing the exact ingredients that are in mine That being said, even though this playdough is made at home it doesn’t mean it should be treated as food. But you can rest assured that if some of this playdough is consumed, it won’t harm your baby.

This is a great activity that you can do with your child. I hope you have lots of fun!

Homemade Playdough Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 2.5 Tsp Cream of Tartar
  • 3/4 Cups Salt
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Cups Water
  • Food Colouring

Instructions

  1. Mix all the Dry Ingredients together (Flour, Cream of Tartar, Salt)
  2. Add in the wet ingredients (Water and oil). The mixture should be thick.
  3. Set a burner to medium on the stovetop and heat up a pot. Once the pot is warm empty the mixture into the pot and begin to stir. Stir continuously to avoid burning the mixture. The mixture should thicken until it creates a firm ball. You'll know it's done when it looks like playdough.
  4. Let the playdough cool down. Once the playdough is cool, divide the ball into 4 equal parts. If you want colourful playdough, create a hole in the center of each ball, grab your food colouring and add your desired colour to each ball. Knead each piece of dough until the dough and food colouring mix well.
